Saturday in Navarra Part 3 - Vršecký wins Race 2

07. June 2014Los Arcos - The interruptions in the day’s first race introduced massive delays in the rest of the day’s events, and it was almost six in the evening when the second race was finally started. All participants from the earlier race, including those that had been involved in the spectacular crashes, were in the running. The skies were still clear and the temperature was still above 30° in the shade.
At the lights Teodosio shot out ahead of Mariezcurrena, the Spaniard then pulling off shortly after with engine problems. But the Portuguese wasn’t able to enjoy his lead for long either, being steadily overhauled by truck after truck till at last he had to make do with the consolation that at least he hadn’t lost 10th place, and with it the final point, to his VTR Europart teammate Rodrigues. Meanwhile Vršecký, who’d set himself at the head of the field, effortlessly fended off Kiss’s intermittent, albeit relatively ineffective, attacks and took the flag a half-second ahead of the Hungarian.
Behind them, Lacko and Hahn likewise crossed the finish line in intervals of half a second. Starting from the rear of the field as a consequence of his having dropped out of the first race, the defending champ fought his way rather unspectacularly up to fourth. Even Albacete, Hahn’s fiercest rival in the last few seasons, let him past without resistance. At any rate the Spaniard could afford to be generous — he’d collected 20 points in the earlier race while the German had come a cropper.
Halm took sixth place behind Albacete and ahead of Bösiger, even though the Bernau driver appeared to be somewhat quicker. Whether it was the pervasive restraint on display or the simple consciousness of having a young lady up ahead, the Swiss knight followed Halm home, his shining armour intact. Reinert finished eighth, ahead of Major and Teodosio.
In the team standings Buggyra finished ahead of Oxxo and Team Reinert Adventure (Hahn / Reinert).
