Renault changes its truck racing philosophy - MKR won’t compete in the ETRC in 2014

13. November 2013It was no big surprise when team owner Mario Kress let it officially be known that MKR Technology will not be competing in the FIA European Truck Racing Championship next year. It was said that the MKR Renaults have been up for sale for a while now, and a few teams have already announced their intention of racing these trucks in the 2014 championship. So one thing’s sure - there will be Renaults on the grid next year. In any case, Renault Trucks could continue to use truck racing as a marketing platform, possibly by sponsoring one or the other race weekend. And the teams that race Renault trucks won’t be entirely on their own; they will be able to rely on technical support, if not from Renault Trucks directly possibly from MKR Technology. The Czech hotshop would then continue to be active in truck racing, albeit as a service team à la the MAN crew, not as a race team.
This, as TRO president Fabien Calvet conceives it, is what the future of the FIA ETRC will look like — a future without the manufacturers at the forefront. This would not only counter the spiralling costs arising out of continual development, but also help bridge somewhat the growing gap between the works teams or factory-supported teams and the rest of the field.
