Sunday in Zolder Part 2 - Vršecký wins Race 3

22. September 2013Zolder - The thermometer read 20°C at the start of Sunday’s first race even though the sky remained overcast, but there was no rain. Like yesterday, the start was in single file; the entire pit straight was a yellow-flag zone, meaning no overtaking. But today this restriction was only for the start; after the second lap the yellow flags were no more in sight, so it was now once again possible to attack on the straight. The race proceeded rather peacefully nevertheless. On occasion a truck would bump into the truck ahead, but nobody was really getting aggressive here.
After a few laps, the quintet headed by polesitter Vršecký had pulled out a gap on the rest of the field. The trucks stuck to each other like magnets, but except for the polite bumps mentioned earlier, there were no “hostile” impacts, nor really serious attacks. It appeared as if each racer was only waiting for the competitor ahead to make a bad mistake that he or she could capitalise on, or that the truck ahead would spring some defect. But neither hoped-for event was realised, and so they all finished as they started, a half-second apart.
Vršecký crossed the finish line first, ahead of Oestreich and Kiss, who accompanied the overjoyed victor to the podium. Hahn and Albacete were fourth and fifth, some way ahead of Lacko in sixth. He in turn was followed by Reinert and Bösiger, who adroitly defended his eighth place – and with it pole for the last race – from Mäkinen. Anthony Janiec (Renault) finished 10th and took the final point.
