Friday in Le Mans

17. September 2010Le Mans - For the truck racers Friday is a sort of resting day, but in the paddock there was quite a bit of commotion. Last Saturday in Zolder the topic hotly discussed by several pilots was the overspeed measurement. The teams not only failed to comprehend those data, but were positive that they might prove them wrong by comparing them with their own data recording. But after the last race, where both MKR Renault pilots coasted to victory 50 seconds ahead of their opponents – this means they were pulling away from the pack at a rate of almost 5 seconds per lap – the focus was set on another topic. You could get the impression that another “tyre war” had broken out, because in the opinion of many truck racers such a domination can mainly be ascribed to the tyres. And in actual fact everybody should have the same tyres.
Apart from that there isn’t much activity in Le Mans – at least with regard to the teams in the ETRC. Several teams did not return home but proceeded directly from Zolder to Le Mans, and had completed there set-up jobs already on Thursday. So there is nothing to do but relax in the sun and watch Lutz Bernau cruise around in his latest acquisition – a three-wheeler.
If the weather forecast is correct and it stays dry all weekend, the discussion about the tyres will probably resolve itself, because the supposedly dominance of the MKR tyres is said to come into effect primarily on a wet track. And there was again a discussion about the so-called tyre lottery, but several people thought that it wouldn’t make much sense at this point in time – the penultimate round.
So the “discussion forum” was declared closed and the status quo was maintained.
