Friday in Jarama

02. October 2009Jarama - Today’s fabulous summer conditions and temperatures around 25 °C (77 °F) in Jarama put the truck racers in a real holiday mood, and according to the forecast the weather will remain brilliant all weekend. But the holiday mood will certainly come to an end tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. at the latest. 31 trucks are registered now, as Jean-Pierre Blaise managed to come to Madrid after all, so that the entire FIA squad is now gathered in Madrid. And for most of the truck racers there is still something at stake. There is not only the already often described fight for the title between David Vrsecky and Antonio Albacete, but there are further places which are still hotly contested: Markus Bösiger is eager to snatch third place from Jochen Hahn; Chris Levett and Egon Allgäuer still battle for 5th, Markus Altenstrasser and Stuart Oliver for 7th, and Balazs Szobi will challenge Frankie Vojtisek for 9th. But that is something the 50,000 expected Spanish fans will certainly not be very interested in. They will wholeheartedly support their hero Antonio and hope that he will be able to collect at least 11 more points on his ‘home track’ than the defending champion, Vrsecky.
In addition to the round of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship the Jarama event will also feature the final of the national Spanish Championship. Here the title is already a sure thing for Albacete, but the other positions are still fiercely contested; and there are 8 Spanish race-by-race pilots completing this year’s biggest field.
But there was also a fly in the ointment today. Rigdon tyres, which had been under observation in the previous races, were definitely banned by the officials in Jarama – although there weren’t any problems in regard to the tyres lately.
