Jarama – Preliminary Report

Jarama – Preliminary Report

03. October 2007The weather forecast for the weekend says summery weather with about 25 °C (77 °F) or even a bit more for San Sebastian de los Reyes, the northern suburb of Madrid where the circuit, named after the river Jarama which passes there, is located. Now and then there could be some cloudlets in the otherwise clear blue sky. And, at last, it was announced that on Friday there will be the final decision about the actual ranking list. As we know, Markus Bösiger, David Vrsecky and Antonio Albacete lost the points they gained at Sunday’s Qualy race in Most – which means minus 10 points for Bösiger, 9 for Vrsecky and 8 for Albacete – but there is no official confirmation so far. So in our lists Bösiger still has an advantage of 33 points to Albacete, in consideration of the points they lost the difference would be 31. But now there are rumours that the results of the Cup race could be invalidated, too, as – only as a result of their protests – the a.m. pilots could start from positions on the grid they were, in fact, not entitled to.
Immediately after the steward’s decision, however, it was expressly stated that the drivers were not disqualified, but excluded from the ranking. This could indeed mean that the leading trio of the Qualy race would not get any points, but otherwise was allowed to carry on with the race as usual; not to mention the fact that this was a decision based on facts as customary at sport contests. And so, before the first light turns to green, it should also be clarified once and for all, whether those pilots, who lay behind the aforementioned three, will get additional points. In any case there will be substantial changes in the championship ranking, because all those pilots, who did not take part in at least 7 races, will lose their points before the next round.
As with all the races in Spain there is again a huge number of entries, more than 35 pilots are registered. But this is no problem for Jarama. To show the relations: At the Nürburgring this would require two groups, because there the maximum number is 28 trucks per race. The almost fanatical audience – a phenomenon which is really unique in truck racing – will stand behind Antonio Albacete to a man. The local hero’s home town is only a few kilometres away from Jarama, and he could master the track blindfolded. Nevertheless, there are bright prospects for Markus Bösiger to win the European Championship for the first time. If in every race he would be just one position behind the Spaniard, the Swiss’ advantage would be reduced by maximum 12 points, but it would be more than enough to win the title. In the team ranking Buggyra is so far ahead, that the win of the first title of this new championship is already a sure thing for the Czechs.
