Kiss wins FIA Prizegiving Challenge in Doha

08. December 2014The working sessions at the FIA’s recent Annual General Assembly (including those of the World Motor Sport Council) done with, it was time for celebration at the FIA Prizegiving Gala. But even before that, the officials and race drivers had (kart)loads of fun in the FIA Prizegiving Challenge, a team karting contest of a rather special sort.
Newly crowned FIA European Truck Racing Champion Norbert Kiss from Hungary teamed up with Dr. Harald Hertz, president of Austria’s "Oberste Nationale Sportkommission für den Motorsport" (OSK, the body representing Austrian motorsport in the FIA) to beat a host of heavyweights and win the Challenge, which actually involved four rather varied individual challenges.
To begin with, each team had to demonstrate that it could, indeed, function as a team by means of a timed lap in a kart-for-two — steered by one member and accelerated and braked by the other!
They then had to submit to a quiz that tested their knowledge of motorsport, before they were allowed to take the wheel once again, to punt a ball into a goal from a distance similar to the penalty spot in soccer. Rounding it all off was a good old man-to-man kart race, with a fair number of ladies in the fray.
Kiss was supreme in the goal kick contest, and he and Hertz were frontrunners in the three other disciplines, landing them on the top step of the podium after all the points were tallied.
