New Truck Racing Organization - Presentation of the New Allgäuer Team

For weeks there was no verified information available regarding truck racing, and, as a consequence, a lot of – partly grotesque – rumours were circulating in the World Wide Web. On the other hand, it was a known fact since the turn of the year that – contrary to the previous assumption – Mario Kress is not going to withdraw completely from the truck racing business, but has already set about constructing two new Renault race trucks; however, he did not want to go public till now. And it was also known that Egon Allgäuer, after his highly critical – or so they say – letter of resignation sent to the FIA, had decided to participate in the FIA European Truck Racing Championship for a further year.

MKR Technology – New Renault Team

Up to now it was only a rumour, but now it’s official; Mario Kress has established a new truck racing team: MKR Technology. The RaceTruck constructer from Baden, who has been working for Buggyra for many years and also lives in Roudnice / Czech Republic, has constructed a new Renault Truck that is going to awe the competition by its sheer appearance. But anybody who knows Kress, who – as constructer and team boss – can look back at six individual wins in the European Championship and three victories with his team, will be sure that behind the martial front there is some well-engineered technology.

Yesterday Examotor published the following press release on their website “camiongp.com”:
Juan Pons recently sent a letter to FIA President Jean Todt, informing him about his irrevocable resignation, for personal reasons, as President of the Truck Racing Commission – a position he has been occupying since 1997 – thanking all staff members, pilots, companies, sponsors, organizers, officials, media people, and the FIA for their support and assistance during all those years.

Rumours, Rumours, Rumours

For weeks on end the truck racing gossip factory has been working overtime – mainly about person-related matters. And there was an increasing number of enquiries as to why the WebPortal „truckracing.de / truckrace.info“ did not cover these issues. But, actually, there are no official and reliable statements available. But there is one issue that seems to be at least semi-official: Ross Garrett is said to become Fabien Calvet’s successor as FIA Technical Delegate.

Truckracing International

At the beginning of October David Vrsecky (CZE) in his Buggyra Freightliner succeeded in defending his title in the FIA European Truck Racing Championship. Same with MAN pilot Noël Crozier who, two weeks previously in Le Mans, managed to defend his title in the National French Championship. But the former European Champion, who seems to have a subscription for the French title, had to worry about his crown right until the final race. Yvan Gaillard – in his Freightliner he bought at the beginning of the season – put the former European Champion under a lot of pressure until the final. For Stuart Oliver (MAN), who secured his title again in the National British Championship beginning of November, it was a bit easier.

Will Bösiger resign from Truck Racing?

Probably we will never again watch an incident as shown on the photo above – where the 2002 Champion, Egon Allgäuer, and the 2007 title winner, Markus Bösiger, are locked in close combat – albeit for different reasons than we would have thought a few weeks ago. After the final the truck racing reports focused on the two pilots from the Alpine countries, because it had been the intention of the Swiss driver to take over Egon Allgäuer’s complete racing team, as the Austrian had been telling several times that he wanted to resign from truck racing. But then there was the much discussed first race at the final round in Jarama and some decisions on the part of the race officials which, in fact, nobody was able to understand.
That’s why Bösiger abandoned his plan to participate in the 2010 season with his own team, which doesn’t necessarily mean that he is going to quit contesting as a racer.

TGP at the Ring 2010 – Advance Booking Office now open

Believe it or not – in 2010 the Truck Grand Prix at the Nürburgring will celebrate its 25th ‚birthday’ and they will certainly use this occasion to offer some special gifts; that is, the ADAC begins their preparations extra early, although the TGP event – which traditionally takes place on the second weekend in July – was again postponed until July 23–25, 2010. While this year the reason for the postponement was the Formula 1 event, next year the TGP event would clash with the final of the 2010 FIFA World Cup which will take place on July 10th and 11th. And as many truck racing fans certainly are also football enthusiasts, the organizers wanted to spare the fans the inner conflict of having to decide whether to stay at home watching the football match on TV or to attend the TGP in the Eifel.

Todt new FIA President – Consequences for Truck Racing

About one week ago the Frenchman Jean Todt was elected President of the FIA. Since that time the question was posed frequently, whether this could imply any changes for the truck racing series – but that’s not very likely. The former Ferrari Formula 1 boss stands rather for the continuation of the current FIA policy. But also his opponent in the presidential election, the Finn Ari Vatanen, who is often said to be a radical reformer, is rather a conservative at heart. Vatanen, who in June 2009 failed to get re-elected to the European Parliament – where from 1999 to 2004 he represented the conservative Finnish party, and from 2004 to 2009 he was a representative of the conservative French UMP (the party the French President Nicolas Sarkozy belongs to) – decided on July 10th to run for FIA President. However, the outgoing office-holder, Max Mosley, kept pointing out Vatanen’s lacking managerial experiences, and made no secret of the fact that he deemed the Finn unsuited for the presidential chair.

Changes

In all kind of sports there is a certain turnover of people after the end of the season, and this applies to the FIA European Truck Racing Championship as well, although in this series there is relatively little activity in that regard. Quite a lot of things are decided upon during the winter break, and more often than not are unveiled shortly before the trucks take to the track again. But this time some information and decisions became known in advance. Fabien Calvet, officially the FIA’s person responsible for all technical matters in regard to the RaceTrucks – but de facto the first contact person for almost all truck racing issues – implied several times during the season that next year he will quit his job after four years in service.

Jarama – This and That

When the first teams arrived at the Circuito del Jarama early in the morning on Wednesday, the paddock was rather wet, because it had been drizzling all night. But later on the weather changed for the better, true to the forecast. There were bright sunshine and temperatures of 25 °C (77 °F) and above, although the nights were fairly cold – the best conditions for a perfect truck racing weekend. But soon there were some clouds looming up on the horizon; beginning with the announcement of the officials in Jarama that the Rigdon tyres were banned completely. These tyres had been under observation for some time after some incidents in Zolder where they showed signs of disintegration, but during the races in Le Mans there weren’t any occurrences in regard to the tyres, so that this decision came out of the blue for the teams. In the paddock there stood a trailer loaded with new Rigdon tyres, while there were not enough Goodyear tyres – the only real alternative to the Rigdon tyres – available.
